Within a few days of release, both Surge and the new Totakeke (also released on Tympanik last week) started showing up on MP3 and filesharing sites, torrents; links trickling down to blogs and message boards, and so on. Don’t get me wrong, I know filesharing is a big avenue for discovering new music and lesser-known artists.
If you downloaded the album without buying it, I just ask, as the artist who created the album you downloaded, that if you like it, buy it.
Seriously, LAME 3.97 encoded, 192 VBR was not the intended format for this release, nor was the artwork intended to be 500×500 pixels. We wouldn’t have put so much work into the mastering and design. Stefan’s photography and artwork truly is amazing — a compressed image of the cover doesn’t do justice. Buying the CD helps Tympanik keep doing what they’re doing, and helps support me as an artist.
While the thought of other distribution channels is always on the table, one thing remains clear: If you love the music, pick it up the way the artist intends. You’ll be able to hear and see the full scope of what we had in mind, plus, more purchases might just give us a reason to press more copies of this limited-run release.
Thanks for reading.

It’s been a busy, good week for Aphorism with the long-awaited release of Surge. We’ve now launched a more expanded site (well, it’s no longer just one page). I’m grateful to see all the new interest! Server logs show hits coming in from well beyond Chicago. Italy, The UK, Germany, Japan, Poland, and other places across the globe. New Fans — Welcome.
Thanks to everyone who made it out for my set at the Underground Lounge last Saturday. Amazing visuals by The Machinist. It was a good gig, and very exciting to finally see the CD for the first time — the finished product, just minutes before the show.
Kinetic Noise will be hosting a more official CD Release party for Surge in the weeks to come.
